Cider lovers, take note: not only will you be treated to the annual Cider Summit Portland this month, but we can also add another star to the rapidly brightening constellation of local cideries.
Urban wine advocate and indie winemaker Anne Hubatch (of Helioterra Wines, Whoa Nelly Wines and Guild Winemakers) and friends Nate and Kris Wall will debut Alter Ego Cider this summer, joining other craft cidermakers in the booming hard apple industry.
The new urban cidery will focus on nuance, delicacy, and depth in a line of complex, small-batch ciders at Coopers Hall (404 SE 6th Avenue), Portland's newest urban wine hub. While many craft cidermakers were once brewers and beer geeks, Alter Ego will tap into the experience of seasoned winemakers who will utilize their grape-honed fermentation methods, flavor profiles, and love of fresh acidity in the cider craft.
The line's flagship cider will feature fresh-pressed flavors from locally grown Northwest apples with a touch of sweetness, and seasonal fruit ciders will bring to Oregon bounty to pint glasses year-round—kicking off with a ruby-hued red raspberry cider. Alter Ego will be available on tap starting June 23 at Coopers Hall, and will be distributed in bottles by the end of 2014.
