wedding

Hitching Post

So I’m getting married in a week and a half and if you know anything about me you know that music at the ceremony is of the utmost importance. Screw the cake, stomach punch the minister…if I can’t walk down the aisle to Black Sabbath’s "Into the Void," what’s the point?

Okay, so maybe that’s a tad extreme…but you get the point. I’m consumed with compiling the right balance of cool, edgy, and familiar for the 140 or so guests showing up in Sisters next weekend. So far I think i’m doing okay, picking out a hundred or so songs for background music [Talking Heads to Tom Waits] for before and after the ceremony. And I feel good about the mix CD i’m handing out to all our guests. I’ve even planned out a processional that includes M. Ward, Blitzen Trapper, Big Star, and Wilco.

The problem, it turns out, is dance music. How do i appease the 50-and-over crowd while keeping my cohorts happy? In other words…how do I have a good fun wedding butt-shaking without playing "Celebration," "YMCA," or any other hunk of crap song that has become almost typical wedding fare?

I have ideas…but would appreciate any you’ve got.

Oh yeah…this is what we’re walking down the aisle to.
