Before Dinner Drinks

PORT IS FOR DESSERT, but sherry should be taken before dinner. A bone-dry fortified beverage from Spain, sherry is wine that’s had distilled spirits added to it. Before purchasing a bottle, you should understand the three main types. When you’re perusing the sherry aisle, think of nuts: A fino is light and refreshing, with a faint aroma of almonds, while the darker, aged oloroso tastes like walnuts. In between is amontillado, an aged fino whose aroma resembles hazelnuts. If you forget our advice, here is one of each kind to try. —Condé Cox
