On November 6, Southeast Portland’s Farina Bakery opened its doors inside the former Otto/ Sel Gris/Fin space. Laura Farina, a young baker who learned her craft at Northwest Portland’s Nuvrei Bakery, focuses on the Parisian macaron (pronounced mah-kah-ron), a meringue-based confection with buttery, manifold fillings.
Her bright pastel clamshells come in a spectrum of 15 flavors, Swedish lingonberry and marionberry to seasonal pumpkin-walnut and apple cider. Beyond macarons, you’ll find batches of fresh-baked chocolate and gingersnap cookies, berry hand-pies and pumpkin sticky buns, served with Sterling Coffee.
The petite, wood-paneled space is brightened by two wall-sized murals depicting Farina’s family heirloom apron collection. Seating is scarce, but Farina hopes to eventually have 16 seats for macaron-hungry patrons.
