  • Izakaya favorite Biwa is launching an advanced sashimi menu for winter. Seven new options include a moriawase daily selection, New Zealand ocean trout with horseradish and olive oil, local oysters on the half shell, and “bitchin’ Pacific yellowtail” hamachi with chile and avocado.

  • Ataula’s Jose Chesa announced that his upcoming churros restaurant, 180, will open mid-December. The deep-fried menu at the small NE Broadway shop will include plain, chocolate, and cinnamon-sugar churros, along with house-made drinking chocolate, marshmallow cream, and caramel-peanut butter sauce for dipping. Chesa also promises a few double-stuffed churros, like crème Catalana and dulce de leche. 

  • Dime Store, the black sheep diner from restaurateur Dayna McErlean (Nonna, DOC, Yakuza), has shuttered for good, according to a recent Facebook post. The reimagined American classic, which opened in Spring 2014 at 837 SW 11th Ave, brought together Oregon-sourced meatloaf and tuna melts with adult milkshakes spiked with Campari and absinthe. Our Downtown lunch crew is sad to see it go. 

  • Gonzo, the Israeli food cart that brought Portland shwarma fries and thick-skinned falafel, has moved into a permanent home. Owner Tal Caspi has relocated to the kitchen at Bar XV, a night club on SW 2nd and Burnside. Caspi is serving his usual menu daily, from 4pm to midnight, with a limited menu until 2am. Gonzo’s short-lived hummus experiment also lives on at XV, with hummus to-go and delivery options from Postmates. Gonzo’s new menu is mostly the same, although Caspi says he is playing with Middle Eastern-Israeli vegan grill options with his newfound kitchen space.  

  • Bunk Sandwich king Tommy Habetz has finally opened his East Coast pizza spot, Pizza Jerk, at 5028 NE 42nd Ave. For an early taste of the menu, check out Eat Beat’s exclusive first look. Stay tuned for more coverage in the coming months.
