Know Your City is in danger.

At a board meeting this past November, the organizers of the six-year-old social justice nonprofit revealed that financial mismanagement (under previous organizers, according to a press release) would force them to close their doors and suspend all programs indefinitely. Members voted unanimously to transition away from paid staff to volunteers in order to save the organization.

While that volunteer solution will keep Know Your City afloat in the short-term, the nonprofit is now seeking to raise $12,000 by the end of this year to keep operations going through 2016.

Know Your City's "People's History of Portland" tour was included in our January 2016 cover package, as #15 in our list of "50 Things Every Portlander Must Do." The tour takes you on a journey through the lesser-known history of Chinatown, Japantown, Portland’s original African American community, and the LGBT community.

To get involved, visit their crowdfunding campaign here, which includes a plea from volunteer executive director, local activist, and one-time mayoral candidate Cameron Whitten.
