Spielman Bagels, the dominant force in Portland’s ever-raging bagel wars and one of Portland Monthly's favorites, is adding a third location to their fleet. Rick Spielman and his son Raf Spielman tell Eat Beat they will take over the former Einstein’s Bagel space (originally a Kettleman’s Bagels) on 2314 NW Lovejoy by the end of January.

The Spielmans are having a field day reviving locations of the failed Einstein Bagel empire, which was acquired by JAB Holding Company, a German investment firm that purchased the chain in 2014 (along with Caribou Coffee, Intelligentsia Coffee, and Peet’s Coffee). The father and son team moved into a new location at 2200 NE Broadway St. in June 2015. Meanwhile, their expanded Division location at 2111 SE Division St. is expected to open at the end of January in tandem with the Northwest location.

The bad news? Spielman will be closing its Downtown satellite cart on SW 10th and Alder, much beloved with the 9-to-5 crowd for it’s supply of ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches. “I think food carts are primarily a lunchtime phenomenon,” says Rick Spielman. Prospective cart owners, take note: this is the third bagel franchise to fail on the Downtown street corner, following Rescue Bagels and Tastebud. For everyone else: don’t worry, you can still can your Spielman Bagel fix at nearby Mugshots Café (424 SW 10th Ave)
