Christopher Handford and Ana Chaud have continued their vegetable evangelism with a second location of their salad-centric venture, Garden Bar, now open in the former Chez Joly space on NW Broadway.

Hanford, the culinary power behind Davis Street Tavern and Jamison, teamed up with Chaud, a local fitness instructor with a passion for health and small businesses, to open the "fast casual" salad-focused restaurant in 2014, with the aim of offering an alternative to traditional salad bars that can leave hungry lunchers wondering if those heavy artichoke hearts and hard boiled eggs will send their midday meal into budget-busting territory.

According to Chaud, the new Old Town space "offers Garden Bar a great opportunity to satisfy the need for a healthy dining option in Old Town. The neighborhood has been underserved for sometime, while some great businesses have been moving in such Air B&B, Squarespace, and Mercy Corp. With PNCA taking over Portland's original post office, three new hotels within six blocks, and other developments on the horizon, Old Town is on the cusp of a great revival and we're excited to be part of it."

The restaurant's Pearl District location—launched just over a year ago—was Portland's first restaurant fully dedicated to made-to-order salads of all kinds, boasting six kinds of greens, a long list of add-ins (many locally sourced) from roasted chickpeas and brussels sprouts to soba noodles and dried cherries, affordable protein sides (like $1 applewood-smoked bacon or salami and $3 lemon pepper tempeh or roasted chicken), plus a rainbow of vinaigrette and house dressing options that put the Whole Foods salad bar sauces to shame.

In addition to the build-your-own salad options (starting at $9), Garden Bar offers a menu of soups and ten house specialties available for the indecisive, from the District Cobb (with romaine, avocado, roasted chicken, and bacon with Rogue blue cheese vinaigrette) to the Cowboy Up (marinated steak, romaine, arugula, roasted fingerlings, and chimichurri).

What's next: Salad lovers can look forward to a third location opening downtown this year ("I don't think we'll be totally happy until we have everyone in Portland having at least one of our salads every week.  That's not a lot to ask, is it?" gushes Chaud), delivery options, and a fresh-pressed raw juice line featuring a "drink your salad" ethos and packed with fruits and vegetables.
