Two of Portland’s greatest obsessions, coffee and chocolate, have come together under one roof. Cup & Bar is a collaborative space from organic, sustainable, bike-delivered Trailhead Coffee Roasters and Ranger Chocolate, a new small-batch bean-to-bar chocolate maker. Between chocolate tours and coffee tastings, Cup & Bar’s café offers sweet bean fusion, with chocolate macchiatos and single-origin drinking chocolate flights.
Inside the former Stark Vacuum warehouse at 118 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, visitors will discover a double-feature: a chocolate factory and coffee roaster, both crafted in full view of the café.
One side, you’ll find Ranger Chocolate, run by cacao fanatics Rhonda Zender and George Domurot. Their bean-to-bar operation roasts, grinds, ages, tempers, and molds the raw, Peruvian single-origin cacao into beautiful bars, like the 73-percent dark chocolate Tumbes—smooth, with hints of cherry and tobacco. On the other side, Trailhead Coffee perfects its medium-roast coffee beans, from Guatemala to Nicaragua. The six-year-old coffee brand is pedaled by a specialized cargo bicycle, carting small-batch beans to restaurants and bakeries around town.
Sliding garage doors separate the roaster and factory from Cup & Bar café, a 1,250-square-foot space serving specialty coffee drinks, simple sandwiches and toast, house-made granola, and sweet, chocolate-heavy desserts. Expect caffeine-spiked drinks like an affogato made with Ranger cacao nib ice cream and hot Trailhead espresso along with a “Cold Fashioned,” a non-alcoholic spin on the classic cocktail with orange, Trailhead cold brew, and homemade fennel simple syrup.
