Free Tiempo Libre Concert at Director Park

It’s not often you get a chance to see a major Grammy-nominated band without having to shell out serious dollars for the pleasure, but Cuban-American timba band Tiempo Libre are offering just that next Monday. The band plays Director Park from 5:30 to 6:30 pm for a free hour of happy hour Afro-Cuban dance numbers, to help promote Artists Rep’s upcoming musical Cuba Libre, which features the band.

Time Storage Building Closes

It’s finally official: Southeast’s Towne Storage building, one-time home to hundreds of artists, is up for sale and all those resident have to find new digs. News that the building was evicting tenants began percolating last month, but this week the building manager confirmed the decision. Some have already moved on, including Division Leap, which is now housed in the Bullier Building in downtown Portland, and due to open its doors again in October.

Patti Smith To Return in January

The last time Patti Smith announced a Portland appearance—a reading this November 20 at the Newmark Theater to promote her new memoir M Train—tickets were gone quicker than you can spell Gloria. The good news is, there’ll be another chance to catch the legendary rocker/writer with a  show at the Schnitz announced today. Tickets for the January 6 show, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Horses, go on sale tomorrow, Friday, September 18. Get on it!

Portland’s Children’s Museum’s Big Toy Sale

Portland’s Children’s Museum is holding a one-time sale this weekend, divesting itself of toys, dolls, craft spupplies, furniture, and household goods, with proceeds going to renoating and maintaingin the museum’s exhibits. The Antiques and Collectibles Sale takes place at the museum’s Canyon Road address, with early buyers invited on Friday from 5pm, while free admission is offered on Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20, from 10 am to 4pm.

Artists Rep Announces First Playwright Commission

Artists Rep has announced the first project under its new play development program Table|Room|Stage (T|R|S)—playwright Yussef El Guindi's play The Talented Ones. The Egyptian-American playwright will have his play—which focuses on an immigrant couple whose marriage comes under pressure as they try to fulfill their American Dream—read and workshopped at Artists Rep during the company's 2015/16 season.
