We don’t mean to gloat, but we called it: Asian breakfast/brunch is the next hot thing. Biscuits and gravy? Chicken and waffles? You’re on notice. Joining the ranks of spots like Han Oak, Thali Supper Club, Expatriate, and Whiskey Soda Lounge, Zilla Sake is now dabbling in Japanese breakfast rituals. The NE Alberta Street sushi spot launched their teishoku-style (set-meal) breakfast trays on October 17, with little bites of fish, rice, vegetables, and eggs.

Co-owner Kate Koo (partner to upcoming Danwei Canting’s Kyo Koo) says she was inspired by Japan’s intimate bed and breakfasts and Brooklyn, New York’s Okonomi, where teishoku is all the rage. 

The menu centers around a choice of four mains: miso-marinated black cod, salt-roasted mahi mahi, rotating sashimi, or locally-made Ota tofu. Filling out the tray are seven sides, from mixed grain rice and miso soup to tamago (soft cooked egg in soy sauce broth) and tamagoyaki (Japanese omelets). Natto (fermented soybeans), ume (pickled plum), and fresh-grated Oregon wasabi are optional add-ons. The whole thing costs $16–26, depending on your protein.

Breakfast hours are Monday–Friday, 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
