Qcut promises jeans that fit all body types.

Jean shopping. These two words often evoke an array of negative emotions, from dread to frustration. But what if it could be satisfying—and maybe even fun? Believing it was possible, Portlander Crystal Beasley created Qcut, a made-on-demand premium denim retailer with 400 sizes to chose from. The here-until-May 31 pop-up, parked in a vacant West End space, offers women the chance to go through the Qcut process and find their “perfect fit,” starting at $235 a pair.

So how does it all work? Before stepping into a dressing room, your first try-on pair of jeans is chosen based on the results of your online fit survey. The deceptively simple survey is composed of only five questions: height, weight, shoe size, bra size, and the size of your favorite pair of jeans. Once you have your initial try-on size, you’re ushered back into the curtained fitting rooms with your beverage of choice (I recommend the rosé). But don’t be surprised if the first pair doesn’t quite fit.

“The first jean that we send is not intended to be your be-all, end-all jean," says owner Beasley. "It’s that last little bit of tweaking that makes people love the jean and not just say, 'Well, I bought it, but it’s just in the drawer. When it’s 95 percent of the way there, but if you could just take the rise down by half an inch and bring in the waist a teeny bit, and make it this length, then it would be perfect. That’s the model.”

Though that’s not to say your “perfect fit” will be available to try on at the pop-up. Out of the 400 sizes, only 55 of the most common sizes are physically at the shop, and the fit matters with a 98 percent cotton and 2 percent stretch blend. But when they fit, they’re magic.

“They do mold to your body in a way that stretch jeans don’t,” says Beasley. “It’s not shrink-to-fit. It’s actually stretch-to-fit, because they stretch a half size and mirror your shape and get super soft when they wear in.”
