If you’ve attended the hedonistic fête that is Feast Portland, you know the drill: the big sandwich blowout; a live fire-smoked food extravaganza; the spicy, loud, fish-sauce drenched night market. When it returns for its fifth year September 15–18, the Northwest’s biggest and baddest food festival will have a few updates.
Somewhere between a festival headliner and a small, intimate dinner, these four mid-sized events were born from the success of Aaron Franklin’s (Franklin Barbecue) Stumptown Cook-Out in 2015. This year will reprise Franklin’s barbecue party and add to the list: Eat Your Feelings—The Noodle Edition (pasta comfort from Han Oak’s Peter Cho, Tosca Café’s Josh Even, and Ava Gene’s Joshua McFadden); Peace, Love and Cocktails (A-list bartender hangout, PDT’s Jim Meehan to Clyde Common’s Jeffrey Morgenthaler); and The Go Get You Some Picnic (Southern-style picnic that includes Mae’s Maya Lovelace and Le Pigeon’s Gabriel Rucker).
Latin Night Market
Departing from its long-running Southeast Asian theme, 2016’s Night Market will fixate on “playful Latin cooking, from Mexico to Madrid.” Taco mashups, grilled Argentine meats, and Spanish bites are all in the works. Portland’s cast is looking strong, with Chesa, Nuestra Cocina, Andina, Xico, and Taqueria Nueve all representing alongside their peers.
PoMo’s Sandwich Invitational Heads East
…to the Rose Quarter! As in years past, 14 chefs will gather to vie for best sandwich. The local lineup includes Bunk, Kim Jong Grillin’, Langbaan, and many more, with a handful of national players like Erika Burke (Chop Shop, Seattle), and Ben Ford (Ford’s Filling Station, LA). Will Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum be guest judges? Here’s hoping.
The smaller chef collaboration dinners, which run Thursday–Sunday, are bringing together a roster of awesome international chefs and Portland mainstays. Here are a few we are jazzed about:
Bon Appetit presents the “Hot Ten”: One of the country’s most influential food publications brings together their flavors of the month. This year that includes Beverly Kim (Parachute, IL), Alex Barkley (Manolin, WA), along with 2013 alums Rachel Yang (Joule, WA) and Joshua McFadden (Portland, OR).
Twisted Filipino: Carlo Lamagna has been sneaking his native cuisine onto the menu at Clyde Common since he took over as executive chef. Now he teams up with Filipino-American brothers Chad and Chase Valencia (LASA), Alvin Cailan (Eggslut), Charles Olalia of RiceBar, and L.A’s dessert queen Isa Fabro for a pork, fruit, and rice extravaganza.
Konnichiwa PDX: Portland’s Japanese specialists, Gabe Rosen (Biwa), Ryan Roadhouse (Nodoguro) and top chefs Naomi Pomeroy (Beast) and Justin Woodward (Castagna) meet New York’s ramen kingpin, Ivan Orkin (Ivan Ramen), and Tokyo’s Kotaro Asakura (Kirakutei, Tokyo) in a mash-up for the ages.
