After a year squatting above downtown Portland’s rambunctious Shift Drinks bar, and, more recently, inside the former Bowery Bagels kitchen in Northwest Portland, Nomad.PDX will settle down for good. Eat Beat has learned that PoMo’s modernist Rising Star Restaurant 2015 has inked a lease at 575 NE 24th St, between Tails & Trotters and Providore Fine Foods. Tentative opening date: late fall.
Executive chef Ryan Fox and sous chef Ali Matteis have grand plans for the 2,022-square-foot space, building the interior from scratch with help from local Golden Rule Design. Blueprints call for a “high tech” kitchen outfitted with induction burners, flush surfaces, and a communal chef’s table. A big, glass wall will separate the kitchen from the dining room with private tables; 25 seats in total. “This will not simply be a restaurant,” says Fox via email, “but more of a journey explored through the lens of local ingredients, farmers, artists, and myself.”
Nomad.PDX is the latest tenant to claim a space in what has become Northeast 24th Avenue’s miniature “Eat Street,” part of Northeast Sandy’s budding identity as a food destination. Current tenants stretch from the Ocean micro restaurant row, which include taco spot Uno Mas, veggie-Indian haunt the Sudra, and Pie Spot, to Sandy’s Providore Market—with new tenants like Nomad.PDX and Korean brunch spot Han Oak fleshing out the fast-casual/specialty market scene.
