Yep, you read that right. Starting Saturday, June 16, Portland’s wildly popular ice cream operation, Salt & Straw, will be offered on Alaska Airlines in first class during lunch and dinner service on cross-country flights, and on trips to Hawaii. Early flavors will include Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons with Fleur de Sel and Meyer Lemon Custard with Blueberries, with new flavors coming later in the summer.

This partnership is a union of new initiatives by the two West Coast companies. Salt & Straw is now doing a line of single-serving ice cream packages, while Alaska announced earlier this spring that it would give the “First Class experience” a facelift. On the food front, that means “fresh, local ingredients paired with seasonal favorites,” local artisan treats (like Sweet Lady Jane brownies from California), and highlighting hot new West Coast wineries and microbreweries. New luxuries also include cozy quilts, “elevated serviceware,” and opulent lounges at JFK and Sea-Tac (scheduled for 2019). And now, single-serving Salt & Straw ice cream cartons.

Of course, if you’re flying from PDX, you could save a few hundred dollars by nabbing some of that same Salt & Straw at the Country Cat marketplace after security and scarfing it down immediately like a starving economy passenger. We won’t judge either way.
