May–December, all over wine country

Field & Vine’s “Dinners in the Field” returns for its seventh year. If you’ve never been to one of these ‘grammable farm-to-table situations, here’s the deal: you eat in, at, or around the farm or vineyard where your six-to-seven-course meal and/or wine pours are coming from. New venues this year include Lemelson Vineyards, Solena Estate, and Anne Amie vineyards, and many others. There are 33 of these bucolic dinners lined up starting this month—get scheduling! 

Haiti in My Heart

6 p.m. Sun, May 19, Departure Restaurant and Lounge, $90

Top Chef star and ambassador of Haitian cuisine Gregory Gourdet hosts his third annual fundraising dinner, with proceeds going to a nonprofit fighting homelessness in Haiti. Pegged to and inspired by the country’s day of independence, Flag Day, Gourdet will cook eight courses, from Poulet en Sauce to Pineapple Upside Down Cake with Rum Raisin Ice Cream. Elsy Dinvil, another Portland-based Haitian food entrepreneur, will join Gourdet in the kitchen. Call restaurant for tickets.

A Fine Line Screening with Argyle Winery

6 p.m. Tues, May 21 at the Chehalem Cultural Center (Newberg) and Wed, May 22 at The Nightwood, $40

Last year's award-winning documentary about equality in the culinary field will have two screenings in Oregon—one in wine country, and the other at The Nightwood event space. Both receptions will feature bites from a massive roster of Portland’s most talented women chefs, from Katy Millard (Coquine) to Chef Naoko Tamura (Shizuku), and include panel discussions with Argyle Winemaker Ksenija Kostic House and other female industry vets.

Barrio Block Party

3-7 p.m. Sun, June 9 at The Nightwood, $30

Ataula co-founder and Puerto Rico native Cristina Baez is hosting her second Barrio Block Party. Expect live music by Neftali and the Borikuas, cooking from Puerto Rican chef Mario Juan Pagán (Arete) and media-loving food cart Pernileria Los Próceres. Oh, and piña coladas galore from noted Puerto Rican bartender John Rodriguez.

Serious Eater at Powell’s Books with Ed Levine and J. Kenji López-Alt

7:30 p.m. Tues, June 25, at Powell’s City of Books

Serious cooks already know all about Serious Eats, the 14-year-old food lab and recipe haven developed by James Beard Award-winning author Ed Levine. His new book, Serious Eater: A Food Lover's Perilous Quest for Pizza and Redemption, chronicles his personal quest to build the trusted food world resource. Also, The Food Lab founder J. Kenji López-Alt will be there. Basically, if you’ve always wanted to ask two of the most prolific food thinkers of our day your burning questions, now’s the time.
