NW Primary Care’s model of care is based on the concept of patient-centered personal medical home. Our goal is to help you to optimize your health and the health of your family by making you partners in wellness and taking a balanced, holistic approach to your healthcare.

Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine is defined as healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) and emphasizes the therapeutic relationship.  Barriers that can impede wellness, such as non-compliance, cost, drug side effects or ineffective treatments make it difficult. Integrative medicine can help to overcome these barriers by combining medical therapies with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

Principles of integrative medicine include:

  • Partner with the patient in the healing process
  • Facilitate the body’s innate healing response by appropriate use of conventional and alternative methods
  • Consider all factors that influence health, wellness and disease and include mind, spirit, community, and body
  • Accept a philosophy that neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically
  • Recognizes that good medicine should be based in good science and open to new paradigms
  • Utilize natural, effective, less-invasive interventions whenever possible
  • Promote broader concepts of health, prevention of illness, and treatment of disease
  • Train patients and practitioners to be models of health and healing
  • Commit to the process of self-exploration and self-development

CAM modalities include osteopathic manipulation, chiropractic treatment, massage, herbs and supplements, Traditional Chinese Medicine, yoga, meditation, biofeedback, guided imagery, hypnosis, energy medicine, music/art therapy, homeopathy, and an emphasis on nutrition and physical activity.

Acupuncture can help in treating numerous problems to promote wellness. In integrative medicine training I focused on acupuncture due to it’s great potential to help my patients. Published literature supports using acupuncture in treating medical conditions, including acute and chronic pain, insomnia, depression and anxiety, headaches, menstrual and menopausal symptoms, allergy and asthma, and nausea from pregnancy or chemotherapy. Acupuncture is very well tolerated with minimal side effects.

In an NIH survey, 63% of US adults over age 50 reported using CAM. Those who used CAM felt that a combination of conventional and alternative medicine was superior to either alone, but did not tell their physicians about the alternative treatments.

As increasing numbers of our patients choose to integrate complementary and alternative therapies into their health care, it is imperative for us to stay open-minded and informed about those modalities so we will be more effective partners in wellness.
