The coastal region is a vacation and residential paradise, it is made up of evergreen forests, picturesque coastal areas, rugged cliffs, sand dunes and vast sandy beaches all along the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, US Highway 101 (which starts in California as the famous Pacific Coast Highway.) Residents live in every type of community, from resort style communities with every possible amenity to quiet coastal towns where waves lap on the shoreline and seagulls fly overhead. There are many recreational opportunities from fishing, cycling, flying a kite on the beach, scuba diving, hiking through old-growth forests, windsurfing and surfing, beachcombing, whale and bird watching. There are also many coast attractions including aquariums, art galleries, theaters and museums.
