BeerMongers is about as no-frills as nerdy beer bars come: a cash register, some high tables, 8 taps, and two wall-sized refrigerators packed with both hard-to-find and popular imports and micros. Pick up a sloppy burrito from Los Gorditos across the street, grab a cold 22oz from their fridge, and recall a time when all of Division was like this. Read more...

The Commons Brewery started in Mike Wright’s garage in Southeast Portland (a true nanobrewery!). The Commons strives to make well executed, moderate alcohol beers with a refreshing and unique character (most often with yeasts originating from Europe). The beers are geared to be session-able and therefore enable or enhance social interaction. For consumers, the focus should be on friends and Read more...

Portland, Oregon has more breweries per capita than any other city in the world, and yet it does not have a signature beer hall to celebrate the tremendous tradition of Oregon Craft Brewing. The craft brewing movement may have officially started in a neighboring state but it is universally acknowledged that Oregon redefined the craft brewing movement and established itself Read more...

Spice things up with this chic, unique, Chinese restaurant/brewery hybrid. From piquant dan dan noodles to crave-worthy Cantonese-style pork, the Asian chow’s delicious at his Rose City Park neighborhood upstart and the house beers—especially the lagers—hit the spot. Light lagers are surprisingly tricky to make (well), but the BTU Lager, brewed with Chinese short-grain rice, is clean and subtle. Read more...

With Harvester Brewing, James Neumeister raised the bar for American gluten-free beers. America’s first dedicated glutenfree brewery opened less than a year ago with three beers—Pale Ale, Red Ale, and Dark Ale—brewed from sorghum, gluten-free oats, and Willamette Valley chestnuts. The brewers’ years of recipe development have paid off, especially in the Dark Ale, which crackles with the flavor of chestnuts roasting over an open fire. Now, with a new Read more...

This airy Linnton tavern offers plenty of room to rehydrate after a hike in Forest Park or recover from a harvest-season trip to nearby Sauvie Island. Fridays and Saturdays draw regulars for prime-rib dinners, but the many burger choices, you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me mountain of tots, and Oregon-proud pints (the taps take in Burnside Brewing and Cascade Lakes) are on offer every day. Swan Island’s beloved burgers and (Oregon) beers spot, which constructed its second location in the Pearl’s old General Electric distribution plant last December, is as American as apple pie. Or, rather, a sweetly tart “Pie Break” cocktail, which tops applejack, lemon, and a dollop of Portland’s own Don’s Spices #2 syrup with frothy egg whites. Upgraded Americana is a calling card Read more...

The Alameda Brewhouse, a Northeast hop spot that features agreeable edibles and décor that drapes steely modern flash over its blue-collar torso, turns 10 this summer. Brewmaster John Eaton, who’s been tending the tanks for the last four years, touts all the selections brewed on the premises: Black Bear XX Stout is an award-winner, and the Klickitat Pale Ale is Read more...

Shunning unusual ingredients, exaggerated flavors, and even (gasp!) IPAs, Occidental is the only brewery in town that focuses exclusively on German beer styles. Started in St. Johns in 2011 by uncle-nephew team Dan and Ben Engler, Occidental serves Kölsch, Hefeweizen, Altbier, and Dunkel, with a rotating cast of seasonals. While the flavor profiles tend toward the balanced and subtle, the Read more...
