Welcome to Portland Monthly’s eighth annual list of Portland’s top medical professionals.  

To give you the best possible resource for your health care needs, we completely reinvented our selection process this year. For the first time ever, we included nurse practitioners in our final list, and we invited all Portland nurses to vote for both doctors and NPs. We built a new, secure voting system to minimize fraud and ballot stuffing. And we assembled an anonymous, independent panel of doctors and nurses from the metro area’s hospitals, clinics, and private practices to review the final selections.  

The basic question we posed to the region’s health professionals remained the same: if you or a loved one needed medical care, which doctor would you call? 

A record 1,100 doctors and nurses responded. The result? Our most comprehensive list yet—416 doctors and nurses in 73 specialities—designed to help you find the best doctor or nurse for your needs, no matter what medical group or insurance you may have. 

OUR METHODOLOGY UP CLOSE 

For this year’s Top Doctors + Nurses list, Portland Monthly invited every licensed medical doctor (MD) and registered nurse (RN) in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas Counties—19,263 professionals in all—to nominate up to three peers in any medical specialty. Participants logged in using their medical license number to vote. After the nominations were tallied, Portland Monthly narrowed the list to the top 5 percent of vote recipients in each field. Our anonymous, independent panel of doctors and nurse practitioners reviewed, investigated, and discussed each of the finalists individually, weighing their education, patient satisfaction surveys, communication skills, and other evidence-based criteria. As of press time, all of the practitioners on our list were certified to practice in their fields by their respective medical licensing board.
