This morning, the newly formed Portland Critics Association (to which this writer belongs) announced the recipients of their first annual film awards. The group was launched in April 2021 by Brent Hankins of The Lamplight Review, and currently sports a roster of 10 area critics.

It was a good day for Dune-heads. Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic took home a whopping seven prizes, mostly in technical categories, including best costume design, original score, and cinematography. The Power of the Dog and The French Dispatch followed Dune with three wins each: Jane Campion scored best director and screenplay for Dog, and Benedict Cumberbatch took best actor; The French Dispatch scooped up best comedy feature, ensemble cast, and supporting actor, for Jeffrey Wright. Best picture went to David Lowery's The Green Knight, its sole victory from eight nominations, and best Oregon feature went to the Portland Monthly-approved Pig.
