Itās no secret that PortlandĀ has long been aĀ world hub for stop-motion animation. Now, with a little help from Jordan Peele,Ā theĀ man behind one ofĀ our biggest stop-motion exportsĀ is about to make his return to the medium with another Portland-shot project. And weāve got the trailer to prove it.
Coraline director Henry Selick, whose other stop-motion credits include The Nightmare Before Christmas andĀ James and the Giant Peach,Ā joined forces with Peele seven years ago to cook up the screenplay forĀ Wendell & Wild, a comedy/horror flick produced by Netflixās Portland-based stop-motion arm. In it, Peele and his former comedy partner Keegan-Michael Key play the titular demons, who trick a teenage girl (voiced by Lyric Ross from This Is Us)Ā to bring them to the land of the living.
After years of quiet hype, Wendell & WildāsĀ first teaser trailer arrived this morning. If the teaserāsĀ hundred seconds are anything to go by, Selick is back in Coraline mode: Weāve got scary nuns, ghosts and ghouls aplenty, and enough nightmare fuel to make most adults break a sweat.Ā
The film premieres next week at the Toronto International Film Festival, before hitting theaters and Netflix on October 28. Itās one of two major upcoming Portland-shot stop-motion releasesāGuillermo del Toroās long-awaited, fascist Italy-setĀ PinocchioĀ arrives in December. Check out the full Wendell & WildĀ trailer below, and if youāre itching to watch some other homegrown Halloween flicks beforeĀ that oneĀ hits streaming, this list should do the trick.Ā
