By November, Portland knows the drill. The rain settles in, daylight disappears before dinner, and a familiar thought creeps in: just make it to spring.
Dr. Ericha Clare, a naturopathic doctor at Moda Wellness Clinic in Johns Landing, sees it differently. To her, winter isn’t something to wait out. It’s an opportunity.
“Winter feels like an ending, but it’s really a beginning,” Dr. Clare said. “The small changes we make now set the tone for the year ahead.”
Her approach rests on one core belief: good care supports the body’s capacity to renew itself. Health, to her, comes down to vitality, resilience, and independence.
Vitality: Listen to what your body is saying
Vitality starts with paying attention. Low energy, brain fog, or a stubborn breakout can be signals worth hearing.
Annual labs use wide ranges, so results can come back normal while a patient still feels off. Dr. Clare casts a wider net, with more markers and narrower, optimal ranges.

“Being told you’re fine isn’t the same as feeling well,” she said. “I want to know what we can do to make you better than fine.”
Skin offers clues too. Moda Wellness providers look past acne or redness to what may be driving it, such as nutrition, gut health, or hormones.
Recognizing those signals is one step. Building resilience is another.
Resilience: Nourish, challenge, recover
Resilience isn’t powering through. Dr. Clare defines it as the body’s ability to adapt to stress. Three habits support it.
The first is nourishment. Constant hustle draws down the body’s reserves. Winter is a chance to refill them with consistent sleep, a slower pace, and slow-cooked meals that nourish as much as they comfort.
The second is challenge. Small stressors like a brisk walk in the cold help the body adapt and grow stronger.
Skin responds to small challenges too. In aesthetic care, microneedling creates controlled microinjuries that prompt repair, while injectable biostimulators gradually rebuild structure for a firmer, naturally refreshed look.

“We’re not putting collagen in,” Dr. Clare said. “We’re helping the skin make more of its own.”
The third is recovery. The body gets stronger in the rest that follows. Even slowing down during everyday tasks helps. Dr. Clare also suggests rotating treatments like acupuncture and IV therapy through the winter. Moda Wellness’ warmed tables and quiet relaxation room offer space for that pause.
“There’s something restorative about letting the treatment happen,” Dr. Clare said. “Your nervous system finally gets a breather.”
Independence: Invest in your future self
Vitality and resilience build toward what Dr. Clare calls healthspan.
“Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how healthy you are in those years,” she said. “A longer healthspan means more independence, the freedom to keep doing what you love for as long as you can.”

For many, skin is an approachable place to begin. After summer, that’s often sun spots or uneven tone. Intense pulsed light (IPL) can help fade them, and with less sun exposure, winter is a practical time for treatment.
Wherever someone starts, Dr. Clare keeps the whole person in view.
“I don’t fix people. I don’t heal people,” she said. “Your body knows how to do that. My job is to clear the way.”
Portland may be counting down to spring. The reset doesn’t have to wait.
