1The Venue: Portland's Convention Center

With an expected crowd of well over 30,000 this year, Portland’s comic con is growing apace, and the convention center has room for expansion. At this rate, our local con could easily grow to fill the 100,000 capacity, and they’re ready for it.

3The Goblin King

Doug and Brittany arrived in style as the Goblin King and Sarah in Labyrinth, proving that cult classics never go out of style.

5The Riddler

Nick’s accurate, yet understated Riddler surveyed RCCC, presumably up to no good.

7X-men and Deadpool

I tried to take a picture of the X-men (Danielle, Erin, Brian, Andrew, and Xander as Professor X), but Deadpool (Loki) jumped right in and made himself comfortable on Professor X’s lap. Typical Deadpool.

9Harley Quinn

Sam’s (Samazon is her cosplay name) Harley Quinn was one of four spotted in the first half hour of the con, but easily one of the best—she was on roller skates, after all.

11TMNT Family

If ever there was an appropriate use of #squadgoals, this is it. Derek and Mindy dressed as Casey Jones and April O’Neil (respectively), and their two boys as Ninja Turtles.

13Lloyd Dobler

Lloyd Dobler—as played by John Cusack in Say Anything, 1989’s classic romantic teen fantasy movie—came to life thanks to Christian. He came equipped with stereo, and Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” playing on tape.

15UofO Comic Studies

By far the largest booth at RCCC, University of Oregon informed alumni, prospective students, and even Beavers fans about their three-year-old minor in Comic Studies, and gave away copies of their student-run comic, Art Ducko.

17Original Batmobile

This (dare I say) sexy car sat quietly towards the back of RCCC. There were velvet ropes, sure, but this car didn’t need to show off or be loud. It knew it was the total package – it is the original Batmobile, after all.

19Miss Frizzle

“Take chances, make mistakes, get messy,” says Miss Frizzle (Alison) in the ‘90s educational show for kids, The Magic School Bus, where in one particularly messy episode, the class gets shrunk down and travels through the bloodstream of a fellow student!

21Spiderman and Deadpool

This dude just won’t quit, and this spontaneous, unscripted moment happened outside of the convention floor, but drew crowds nonetheless. Spiderman (Nick) hopped on Deadpool’s (Loki again) back and were given weapons from the crowd. They fended off their attackers, and all was well in the world.

23Teen Titans

These cosplayers are professionals. Among them, they have three cosplayer fan pages where you can book them, or have them create costumes for you. Terrence, Megan, Lexi, Rae, Alicia, Bryce and Steven posed for Teen Titan pictures for over 20 minutes.

25Wonder Woman

It’s not often that you get to see three versions of the same character in one place. But at RCCC, anything is possible. Retired Wonder Woman (left)—an RCCC staple since its inception—is played by a covert former network news reporter and won last years costume contest. She is joined by her younger selves, played by Misty (center) and Jeremy (right).

If you saw an unusual amount of people wandering around Portland in costume this past weekend, rest assured: Halloween has not come early. Rather, they were likely en route to the fourth annual Rose City Comic Con at Portland’s Convention Center. We walked in among the throngs of attendees (with upwards of 30,000 expected this year), many of whom were in expert-level cosplay (see the slideshow above). As for the Con? Lively, fun and super safe—thanks, in part, to a strict no-harassment policy and signs posted everywhere. A cosplay extravaganza, with panels, programs, and parties, and all for the bargain price of $50. Take that San Diego!
