Love Letters is Portland Monthly’s quarterly series from nonfiction comics creator and editor Shay Mirk celebrating the parties and places that shape our city.

Take a walk around most any Portland neighborhood, and you'll spot a Little Free Library. You might even see one that holds something other than books: tennis balls for dogs, whistles to raise an alarm, Legos, puzzles. In Rachael Harms Mahlandt’s Montavilla yard, Shay Mirk spotted dinosaurs and coffee mugs to exchange, as well as plenty of other displays that simply make you smile. Harms Mahlandt also maintains a map of Worldwide Sidewalk Joy, as she calls it, to point people to other "curated public galleries, exchanges and displays...created to bring a bit of whimsy and inspiration to the community." —Margaret Seiler
