The Annual Cannon Beach Cottage Tour Returns September 12-14

Tucked among the trees and tides — Cannon Beach’s cottages invite you in.

Sunset Magazine calls the annual Cannon Beach Cottage Tour on September 13 the “best autumn event,” a much-anticipated highlight of three days of festivities celebrating the history and art of the town. Hosted by the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum, the weekend kicks off on Friday, September 12, with the Opening Night Benefit Bash. A much-anticipated event, it brings crowds of locals and visitors together to enjoy live music, delicious appetizers, drinks, and a Silent Auction.

Saturday is the day for the 22nd Annual Cannon Beach Cottage Tour, an event that attracts more than 500 lovers of architecture and history.  As well as being a much-loved showcase for Cannon Beach’s historic homes, the tour and the opening night event are powerhouse fundraisers for the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum, contributing a significant portion of the museum’s annual income.

The Cottage Tours launched 22 years ago, soon after the Museum’s doors opened, and have grown in popularity every year since. “We always find ways to enhance the experience,” says Executive Director Liz Scott. “It’s a work of love by the museum staff, and we focus on a different area each year. In the past, the tour included only historic cottages, and it’s grown to embrace lots of different styles and architectural designs,” Liz says. “We always ask for feedback so we can keep making it better. This year, all the homes are smaller, historic homes at least 50 years old, and in many different styles. This will be great fun, because the interiors often are completely different from  what you expect from the outside.”

Ticket holders will receive maps for the self-guided Cottage Tour when it begins at noon on Saturday. Maps will include details on the architecture and information about the history of each house, as well as exclusive discounts to local businesses and services.

On Sunday, September 14, visitors can celebrate the art of light and charm with a creative candle painting workshop at the Museum. Lead by Kalla Jae, owner of Scouts Annex, a local, family-owned business based in Seaside and known for raw honey and handcrafted beeswax candles, the workshop invites guests to a hands-on experience where they will learn about the rich history and cultural significance of beeswax, and enjoy an elegant afternoon tea with refreshments from local businesses.

Dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of the region, the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum is home to the cannon that gave Cannon Beach its name, a replica Native American longhouse, a tide pool exhibit, and historical displays about the area’s past. Throughout the year, the museum also hosts a free lecture series, workshops, and family-friendly activities. This unique nonprofit remains free to explore, thanks to generous donations and events like the Cottage Tour.

More to do in Cannon Beach

Home to the Native American Clatsop, Nehalem, and Tillamook peoples since at least the 15th century, and later settled by Europeans in the mid-1800s, Cannon Beach has been called one of the 100 Most Beautiful Places in the World by National Geographic. Just 90 minutes from Portland, it’s a walkable beach community known as one of the top art towns in America, as well as the iconic Haystack Rock. Part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Haystack Rock offers wonderful opportunities to see a huge colony of Tufted Puffins, tidepools with exotic sea creatures, and sweeping vistas of unspoiled coast.
