Shopping for furniture used to be a long, drawn-out day of mini-malls or bland warehouse hunting.Restoration Hardware’s gorgeous new 46,000-square-foot space at 474 NW 23rd Avenue puts those ho-hum ideas to rest.
“We don’t build retail stores,” says Restoration Hardware CEO Gary Friedman. “Most retail stores are archaic, windowless boxes that lack any sense of humanity. We are building inspiring spaces that blur the lines between residential and retail, indoors and outdoors, physical and digital. Spaces that are more home than store, surrounded by French doors, and flooded with natural light, with a 40-foot skylight above the dramatic central staircase that leads you up four floors to a beautifully landscaped rooftop park.”
Hyperbole? Yep. But visiting the four-story wonder—each floor its own section, with interior, modern, and outdoor artfully arranged into lifestyle installations—is certainly more inspirational that your run-of-the-mill hardware store. The second floor contains the RH Design Atelier, a 2,700-square-foot studio workspace for clients, designers, and architects to work together on revamping a room or entire home. Visitors can work with Restoration’s in-house team to create beautiful spaces while also combing through their extensive library of fabrics, leathers, and furniture and lighting finishes.
The store’s crown jewel is the aforementioned rooftop park, which features panoramic views of the West Hills and downtown Portland among cozy outdoor furniture vignettes, with river birch trees towering from planters and shiny chandeliers.
