In 1990 & ’91, director David Lynch’s TV series Twin Peaks wove the mystery of a murdered homecoming queen (the tragic Laura Palmer), the no-nonsense FBI agent Dale Cooper, and a Northwest town seething with sex, the supernatural, and an unlikely but amazing sense of style. A quarter-century later, a new season will come to Showtime next year. To celebrate, we re-create ’90s grit and glamour that’s very of the moment.

The series stirred up memorable, entirely age-inappropriate high school drama for characters like Donna and Audrey.

Could a small town near the Canadian border really spawn an elaborate netherworld that included a luxury brothel? In Twin Peaks (and at the show’s elegantly debauched hideaway One-Eyed Jack’s), the answer was yes.

In Twin Peaks, nothing was quite as it seemed—not the owls, not the families, and definitely not the cryptic lumber-toting character known as the Log Lady.
