The Sudra is one of many vegan eateries offering 50 percent off any item on Earth Day. (Coupon required.)

It’s no secret that animal agriculture plays a big role in climate change. An oft-cited study by the United Nations found that the livestock sector creates 18 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions— which is more than all cars, planes, trains, and other transportation sources combined. (That’s not to mention that livestock production takes up nearly one-third of the planet’s entire land surface, and nearly 10 percent of its freshwater use.)

It makes sense, then, that some Portlanders are going vegan (or at least cutting back on animal products) in an effort to combat global warming. And this Earth Day, NW Veg makes it easier than ever for folks to sample the city’s famous plant-based eats. The local nonprofit is offering a coupon good for 50 percent off any menu item at more than a dozen local vegetarian eateries, from health food favorites Harlow and Canteen to date night spots like Aviv and Ichiza. Valid only on Sunday, April 22, the coupon is available at the NW Veg website, along with the list of participating restaurants.

So, if you’ve ever considered incorporating more plant-based meals into your life—or if you just like cheap food—mark your calendars for April 22. After all, when else can you score a $4 falafel at Wolf & Bear’s, a $6 taro sandwich at No Bones Beach Club, or a $7 tofu benedict at Blossoming Lotus? (Just don't forget to tip well!)
