From the ICU staff prepping for COVID-19 patients to clinics setting up tents in their parking lots to pen-and-paper types suddenly having to navigate telehealth apps, so much has been asked of the medical community in the past year. And Portlanders have thanked them, as well as other front-line workers, with billboards, handmade signs, food deliveries, and evening cheers.
At Portland Monthly, though, we had to ask these already overwhelmed medical pros for one more favor: to fill out our annual peer survey and answer some big questions. Who would you want to have looking out for your family’s health? To whom would you turn if you got sick? The names here represent the top 5 to 10 percent of vote-getters across specialties from addiction medicine to wound care, as well as nurse practitioners and providers from acupuncturists to midwives to naturopaths. We try to have extra slots for some of the most commonly called-upon categories, like pediatricians and urologists. (Find a local list prepared by the firm USA Top Dentists here.)
Seventeen years in, we still get asked if this is paid advertising. It’s not. Our survey is far from perfect: people who work for large organizations where lots of coworkers are familiar with their work definitely have an edge, for example. But the names here are a great starting point for when you find yourself asking who you want to have looking after your family.
