Saul Zaik's Homes, Past and Present
Architect Saul Zaik designed and built his own home in 1959; he's opening it up for tours May 11.

Mid-century modernism is a popular style, often seen as retro, a look back or a revival of something that started more than half a century ago. But in some ways, here in Portland, there's nothing retro about it. Northwest Regional Modernism is simply a vibrant approach to architecture and design. It thrives, continues to evolve, and is aging gracefully.
You could say the same about some of the architects who favor this style and the buildings they've created. A fine example is Portland architect Saul Zaik, age 86, a prolific designer of residential buildings since he opened his own practice in 1952, and still energetically engaged in his profession.
Six homes designed by mid-century modernist Saul Zaik will be open to the public May 11 for the Historic Preservation League of Oregon's fundraising tour.

This weekend Zaik is opening up his own house (which dates from 1959, and is on Portland Monthly's short list of Greatest Houses) for a public tour as part of the Historic Preservation League of Oregon's (HPLO) annual fundraiser. The tour Saturday, May 11 is self-guided, and includes six Zaik-designed homes in Portland's West Hills plus a special lecture about his work, at 1 pm (where the architect will also be present).
