Slide Show: Behold the Threshold
April 8, 2013

The default residential threshold in Portland: public sidewalk meets private concrete path and grassy lawn. What does the design say? We like the basics.

Default plus: we like the basics, but keep out, especially if you're biking on the sidewalk and under the influence.

Double threat: we're traditionalists (classic chain link) but like to add a touch of elegance (and heft) with the clipped hedges.

Say it with built structure: please walk through our zen pergola (and we're funky - like the blue fence?).

Say it with built structure: please walk through our double zen pergola.

Say it with built structure softened by wild greenery: walk under the leafy pergola, don't forget to open the friendly wooden gate.

Say it with built structure: our fence is plain and humble, but look at our fancy bamboo gate!

Landscape as structure: welcome, walk through our simple but whimsical arch. (Our gardening staff keeps it clipped.)

Landscape as structure: walk between our giant bushes if you can; we're old and planted these shrubs decades ago.

Landscape as structure: we like dramatic plants, and love to garden.

Triple threat: fence, clipped trees as screen, contrasting arched gate. (You didn't notice the recycling, did you?)

We live in our own gated community: unless we gave you the code for entry, you'd better call ahead.

We can't get enough of Home Depot: gate? Check. Flowers? Check. Stones? Check. And the olde-style street lamp lets us pretend we're in New Orleans.

We've got a fence, but please come in. Would you like some green tea?

We thought we wanted to fence ourselves in, but now we're not so sure.

We're funky Portlanders and our fence gate is always open.

Stones for grandeur: welcome to our estate.

Stones for grandeur, smaller scale: welcome to our typical 50' x 100' Portland lot.

Stones, rustic style: easy going, zen approach to the sculpted entry.

Plants in pots, watch your step: we like to garden and move our plants around.

Step up, and through the bamboo screen, into our private realm.
