Facts N Figurines

We Liked It

By Lucas Bradley-Kelly May 19, 2009

HER GIVEN NAME is Anne Adams, and she’s been playing out under the moniker of Per Se for the past few years, but now she’s called Grey Anne. Got that straight? Her debut album, Facts n Figurines (Greyday Records), features 11 songs permeated by notions that should resonate with post-collegiate Portlanders: the seesaw between disillusionment and optimism, for instance, or our futile attempts to solve the mysteries of attraction. Musically, her sparse guitar, pensive accordion, and willowy voice are in perfect sync with the restlessness of Northwest winters. In other words, while this collection of pixie-pop is friendly, familiar, and even kind of sexy, it’s still a tad grey. Fortunately, Adams’s deft lyrical touch dissects the stumbles and foibles of intimacy with a playful aplomb that gives her low-key folk music surprising buoyancy. (Grey Anne’s CD release party is Nov 14 at the Artistery, 4315 SE Division St.)
