Eden Out Of Her Hand

Opera Theater Oregon debuts a swooning melodrama.

By Anne Adams February 9, 2011

This Valentine weekend, the kitschiest little opera company in town, Opera Theater Oregon (of Hercules vs. Vampires acclaim) premieres Out Of Eden , a take on the Massanet classic Werther. In this tragic tale, somber poet Werther hopelessly pines for betrothed beauty Charlotte. But OTO, never content to trot out a typical show, has magnified the faints and sighs to silver-screen-size. Out Of Eden will use the classic songs, but will also intersperse 1950’s-melodrama-style film footage into the live opera performance. If this trailer does it justice, it looks a media-melding, era-bending spectacle, with hand on heart, and tongue in cheek.
