Dandy Warhols' 13 Songs in 13 Places

Portland pop stars visit a baker's dozen locations across the city today and tomorrow for a video compilation.

The Dandy Warhols—coming soon to downtown Portland.

If you're spending some idle time downtown this afternoon and tomorrow, you have a decent chance of running into the Dandy Warhols on location.

The gracefully aging Portland pop stars will be setting up, rocking out, and tearing down again in more than a dozen different spots over the next 48 hours to film 13 Songs in 13 Places, a video compilation the band is working on with the folks from Into The Woods.

Dandy's keyboardist Zia McCabe tells me that it's all part of the planned celebration in honor of the thirteenth anniversary of their album 13 Tales of Urban Bohemia, which includes a pair of shows in June at the Wonder Ballroom, as well as a tour.

"We sat around and brainstormed all things '13' … and one of the ideas was to run around and film at 13 locations from the band's history, as sort of a flash-mob, busking thing," McCabe says.

She explains that one of the band's auxiliary touring musicians, Nathan Junior (Duover, Stan McMahon Band, among others), helped make the guerrilla video project a real possibility. "He loves battery powered amps—guitar amps, bass amps, and P.A.—so we have just enough to power us all so we can pop out of the van, do a song in one location, and go to the next one," McCabe says, "and we'll see how many people we get on Twitter following us."

If you have your heart set on being part of the action—or making a nuisance of yourself—follow the posts on the Dandy's twitter feed @TheDandyWarhols for news on locations and times.

We do know that they'll be kicking out the jams at the former site of the X-Ray Cafe (SW Second & Burnside) this afternoon at 4:30. Tickets for the two-night stand at the Wonder Ballroom go on sale this Friday. And if you can't wait that long to feel the Dandys magic, they will be guests on this Saturday's editon of Live Wire!
