TICKET GIVEAWAY

Win Tickets to Martha Wainwright with Thomas Lauderdale on Tuesday!

Wainwright is joined by Pink Martini bandleader Thomas Lauderdale on Tuesday at the Doug Fir. AroarA opens.

By Aaron Scott March 10, 2013

Martha Wainwright might be born of music royalty—the daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright, the sister of Rufus—but she’s a musical force of nature in her own right. Her smoky voice can swing from intimate confession to ferocious exhortation, and her lyrics relish in saucy word play.

She first found a place on the musical map outside her family with her eponymous debut in 2005. She followed it up with I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too in 2008 and the fabulous Edith Piaf tribute in 2009, Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, à Paris. Her most recent album released last year, Come Home to Mama, delves into the loss of her mother, including the devastating performance of "Proserpina," the last song McGarrigle wrote before dying of cancer. You might also recognize her covers of "Tower of Song" and "The Traitor" from the film and album Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man. In other words, Wainwright is a performer deeply steeped in music history, yet savvy enough to be looking forward.

As a little beginning of the week treat, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to her upcoming show at the Doug Fir Lounge on Tuesday at 9pm, where she'll be accompanied by Pink Martini bandleader Thomas Lauderdale. AroarA opens.

Enter here to win.

We'll let the winner know by Tuesday at noon.

Check out a couple of her songs, and then get ye to the show:

She swears on this one, but it’s totally disarmed by the devilish good joy she find in doing so on television.
