The Lumineers' drummer and cofounder Jeremiah Fraites told the Chicago Tribune, “When [we] got together, our first band name was Free Beer. There was no focus; it was a mad, random mess.” My how things have changed. Whether you know it or not, you’ve tapped your feet or whistled along to the tunes of the Lumineers. In a dizzying matter of months, the Denver-based band skyrocketed from performing in relative obscurity to becoming radio regulars and stadium players, riding the roots revival wave that propelled Mumford and Sons to the Memorial Coliseum a couple weeks ago. Seems like their massive hit “Ho Hey” has been covered more times than the entire ouvre of John Denver.

While the Lumineers have refined their creative process, and zeroed in on a style that works, they haven’t forfeited the initial raw passion and drive that thrust them into the limelight. If the medium is the message, the message of the Lumineers is a vehement criticism of the digitalized world, and a desire to connect with their fans through real, honest music. We can support that.

The Lumineers play the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on September 22. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 7, at 10 a.m.

Also on sale Friday at 10: Death Cab for Cutie. And in case you missed it, the National, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Onerepublic also went on sale. These and more at our roundup of summer concerts.

Until then, check out some of the Lumineers videos below.
