Since the 2004 launch of PDX Pop Now!, the volunteer-run, nonprofit organization has undoubtedly achieved their primary mission: exposing the public to Portland's best local acts, and catapulting those bands to national acclaim. The annual compilation is put together in a purely democratic fashion: songs are assembled through artist submissions, and then run through a rigorous blind listening panel of around 100 volunteers and board members. The result is that bands like Y La Bamba, which few had heard of before they submitted a song in 2008, rise to the top and go on to become local favorites and national touring acts.
