Slide Show: Sasquatch Music Festival 2014
May 27, 2014

Friday, 1 PM - Iska Dhaaf
My adventure began with this Seattle duo, composed of Benjamin Verdoes and Nathan Quiroga. Verdoes is also the frontman for Mt St Helens Vietnam Band, one of my favorite shows from Sasquatch 2009.

Friday, 1 PM - Modern Kin
Portland's own Modern Kin wowed a growing crowd of arriving attendees to kick off the Yeti Stage performances.

Friday, 1 PM - The Physics

Friday, 2 PM - Kithkin
Kithkin didn't waste a moment of its 45-minute set; the guitarist stage-dived less than a minute into his first song, and was barely caught in time by a very surprised crowd.

Friday, 2 PM - Rhett Miller

Friday, 2 PM - The Stepkids
I was surprised and charmed by this group's perfectly synchronized dance moves—who knew frontmen could be their own back-up dancers?

Friday, 3 PM - Night Beats

Friday, 3:05 PM - White Sea
Best known for her work with M83, Morgan Kibby's solo project blew all the other stages out of the water—pun intended.

Friday, 4:10 PM - Kongos

Friday, 4:10 PM - Hozier

Friday, 4:45 PM - Eugene Mirman
Hey, isn't that the kid from Bob's Burgers? He's bigger in person.

Friday, 5:15 PM - Shakey Graves

Friday, 5:30 PM - Chance the Rapper
The 21-year-old rapper drew a huge crowd to the Bigfoot Stage, and Chance declared it his biggest & best show ever.

Friday, 6 PM - Princess feat. Maya Rudolph
Maya Rudolph threw down her fiercest Prince impression during this performance with her Prince tribute band.

Friday, 6:35 PM - Foy Vance

Friday, 6:35 PM - Phosphorescent
Is it just me, or is there something weird about wearing your own band's t-shirt during a performance?

Friday, 7:15 PM - Gifted Gab

Friday, 7:25 PM - Tourist

Friday, 7:55 PM - Houndmouth

Friday, 8 PM - Phantogram

Friday, 8:15 PM - Sam Lachow

Friday, 9:15 PM - Damien Jurado

Friday, 9:15 PM - Raz Simone
After the show, Raz invited all his fans onto the stage for free CDs—only to be shot down immediately by the stage security guards.

Friday, 10 PM - Yelle
Despite her limited English and the crowd's considerably more limited French, Yelle won our hearts with her dance tent set.

Sasquatch Trend #1: crazy cute children
Sasquatch babies are the best babies.

Saturday, 1 PM - Deap Vally
Nothing like a sequined bikini.

Saturday, 1 PM - Bright Light Social Hour

Saturday, 1 PM - New Lungs

Saturday, 2 PM - Radiation City
Portland's Radiation City dressed really well and played even better. (No, really, Patti King, can I borrow your outfit?)

Saturday, 2 PM - Half Moon Run
This Canadian rock band was an exciting new find for many attendees.

Saturday, 2 PM - Augustines
Good thing this band changed its name, because "We are 'We Are Augustines'" would have sounded awkward. Which is presumably why they changed it. But I digress.

Saturday, 3:05 PM - The Dodos

Saturday, 3:05 PM - Rathborne

Saturday, 4:10 PM - Sol
Love seeing the crowd in Sol's sunglasses!

Saturday, 5:15 PM - The Growlers
Brooks Nielsen's unassuming stage presence and slouchy swaying charmed me completely.

Saturday, 5:30 PM - Band of Skulls

Saturday, 6:55 PM - Washed Out

Saturday, 7:55 PM - Cloud Control
Judging by my limited and informal polling, this band had one of the most surprisingly successful, stand-out sets of the fest.

Saturday, 8:15 PM - Chastity Belt

Saturday, 8:20 PM - Panda Bear
The enormous trippy visuals were all very, very AmCo.

Saturday, 8:30 PM - Chet Faker

Saturday, 8:45 PM - M.I.A.
This predictably provocative performance included striking political visuals and a giant on-stage dance party.

Saturday, 10 PM - Tyler, the Creator
Tyler's lyrics may be abrasive at times, but his stage banter was surprisingly charming and amusing. "Can we all get a little ignorant for a minute?" he asked before launching into a rap dedicated to girls who suck, uh, you know.

Saturday, 10 PM - Tokimonsta

Sasquatch Trend #2: Festival Tribute Tattoos
As a six-time Sasquatchian myself, I admit I'm tempted...

Sunday, 1 PM - Tacocat
The band's bubble machine is a new must-have for any mid-afternoon dance party.

Sunday, 1 PM - Pollens
Seattle's POLLENS may rival our Radiation City on the cute, young, extremely talented, Pacific Northwest-based indie group front.

Sunday, 1 PM - Big Scary

Sunday, 2 PM - La Luz
Who recognizes the bass player? Click back a couple slides...

Sunday, 2 PM - Pillar Point

Sunday, 2 PM - Little Green Cars

Sunday, 3 PM - Shelby Earl

Sunday, 3:05 PM - The Lonely Forest
Does frontman John Van Deusen have eyes? If he does, he sure doesn't open them very often. Perhaps it was all that blinding Gorge sunshine...

Sunday, 3:10 PM - tUnE-yArDs
As always, Merrill Garbus' electrifying, colorful, bold, high-octane performance blew everyone away. I especially appreciated how her outfit matched the cover of her new album, "Nikki Nack."

Sunday, 4:10 PM - Sir Sly

Sunday, 4:10 PM - Lucius
This Brooklyn ensemble's chic matching costumes took me totally by surprise. Check out those glasses!

Sunday, 5:15 PM - Syd Arthur

Sunday, 5:30 PM - Black Joe Lewis

Sunday, 6:35 PM - Papa

Sunday, 6:55 PM - Bob Mould
Best known for his work with Hüsker Dü in the 80s and Sugar in 90s, 53-year-old Mould proves you're never too old to rock.

Sunday, 7 PM - The Flavr Blue
It rained through the Flavr Blue's set, but the Seattle ensemble wasn't fazed in the least, and neither was the dancing crowd.

Sunday, 7:25 PM - Banks

Sunday, 7:15 PM - Haim
Who would have guessed that this sister trio of Californian twentysomethings would have the most profane stage banter of any group at Sasquatch?

Sunday, 8 PM - Fly Moon Royalty

Sunday, 8:20 PM - Rodriguez
I found Sugar Man with minimal searching. (Couldn't resist.)

Sunday, 8:30 PM - Big Freedia
Standing in the front row of the photo pit during Big Freedia's twerk-centric bounce music madness is not for anyone averse to a little ass-shaking.

Sunday, 8:45 PM - Kid Cudi
On a personal note, my mother and her very conservative lawyer-boyfriend both danced with wild abandon throughout Mescudi's main stage show, and I have the video to prove it. Life made.

Sunday, 10 PM - Portugal. The Man
While one Portland band opened the festival, this PDX-based band wrapped it up for anyone too tired to stay up for Major Lazer's midnight dance party.

Sasquatch Trend 3: Phenomenal Sunsets
Seriously, though. Can I live here?

That's all until 2015!
This mural was the largest of many art projects painted throughout the first day of the festival. Woohoo, Sasquatch!
