A Hot Two-Night Stand for Portland Theater Awards

Portland Playhouse scores big at the Drammys after OSF’s All the Way snags two Tonys on Broadway.

By Aaron Scott June 10, 2014

The passion of Portland Playhouse's The Light in the Piazza was incendiary, burning through five awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Goldsmith, left.

The last two days have been a nonstop party for Portland’s theater community. On Sunday night, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival–commissioned All the Way won two Tonys for its Broadway production—one for Best Play and one for Best Actor for its lead, Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad fame. The Tonys were the cherries on the cake, as the play about LBJ, directed by OSF’s artistic director Bill Rauch both in Ashland and on Broadway, has been wracking up awards left and right, starting with the inaugural Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History in February 2013, and going on to almost a complete run of Best Play and Best Actor categories at the various New York awards (Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, etc.).

Then last night, Portland’s theater community turned out in gowns and three-piece suits for the Drammys, Portland’s spin on the Tonys (and the most fabulously fashioned local awards ceremony—makes one wonder how many wardrobe closets were pillaged Sunday afternoon!). As host, local actor and national YouTube proposal–celeb Isaac Lamb kept the mood jovial (when John Ellingson toasted the recent gay marriage ruling for making his union possible in his Special Design Speech, Lamb quipped “How many hits do you have?”). And the booze, the jokes, and the accents flowed freely (although the air conditioning distinctly did not), as the packed, sweltering room celebrated the year’s best performers and productions.

Portland Playhouse dominated both the musical and play categories with eight awards total. The excellent The Light in the Piazza swept five: Production of a Musical, Actress in a Musical (Merideth Kaye Clark), Music Direction (Eric Nordin), Supporting Actress in a Musical (Jennifer Goldsmith), and Supporting Actor in a Musical (David Meyers). And A Christmas Carol won three: Production of a Play, Ensemble in a Play, and Director of a Play (Cristi Miles).

Blake Peeples moves as the lead in Oregon Childrens' Theatre's Zombie in Love earned him Best Young Performer.

The other big winner of the night was Oregon Childrens’ Theatre’s Zombie in Love, which took home Original Script (Michelle Elliott), Original Score (Danny Larsen for music and Michelle Elliott for lyrics), Director of a Musical (Marcella Crowson), and Young Performer (Blake Peebles).  I suspect OCT has another The Giver on its hands that will hopefully see future productions the country over. Speaking of, this year's production of The Giver also won OCT Drammys for Properties Design [Drew Dannhorn] and Projection Design [Jeff Kurihara], giving OCT a total of six awards.

Also of note were the Special Theatrical Achievement Award given to Atomic Arts, the team behind the recently concluded five-season run of Trek in the Park, and the Special Achievement Award given to Northwest Classical Theatre Company’s founding artistic director, Grant Turner, who was announced today to be the new co-artistic director of Portland Shakespeare Project (PSP).

Here’s the complete list of nominees and winners. What do you think of the results, theater lovers? What plays and performers do you think were overlooked? Personally, I still can’t believe The Motherf**ker with the Hat didn’t get nominated for at least Ensemble in a Play. A case of cuss-word aversion? And Badass Theatre's Invasion topped most of the local critics' lists of the best of 2013, but only got a nomination for Supporting Actress (a re-mount opens on Wednesday). Others?
