To Infinity and Beyond 

The highly physical Los Angeles dance company Diavolo has a thing for large, elaborate sets. Working with architects and fabricators, the company has created a monstrous cube, a 2.5-ton aluminum wheel, a 17-foot-long rocking boat, and, in its newest work, an enormous perforated dome. Set to Philip Glass’s Symphony no. 3,Fluid Infinities concludes a trilogy of dances commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Los Angeles Timeslauded the series debut as “one of those rare events that defines the art of this city.”

These Boots Are Made for Dancing

Sure, the music might be by Cyndi Lauper. And yes, the show won six Tonys. But the real stars of the smash hit musical (and the standout in Portland’s Broadway season) Kinky Boots are the red, thigh-high, six-inch stilettos that arrive on a conveyor belt and depart in a finale that can only be called shoe porn.

Darkness and Light

British-American artist Anthony McCall creates “solid light films,” which feel like voids in which light forms the only surfaces. As a spectator/participant, your hands and body disrupt that light, reshaping the world around you. Portland’s oldest commercial building—built in 1857 by Absolom Hallock, two years before Oregon became a state—will serve as the perfect setting.
