Last December, Hailey Kilgore made her Broadway debut, starring as Ti Moune in the revival of the musical Once on This Island.
On May 1, she was nominated for a Tony Award.
Not bad—perhaps especially for a 19-year-old who grew up in Happy Valley and whose previous professional credits are limited to a pair of shows at Portland Center Stage.
In Once on This Island, which nabbed a total of eight nominations, including best director and best revival, Kilgore plays a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy, light-skinned boy. It's pretty much Romeo and Juliet in the Caribbean, with a live goat onstage. She's received glowing reviews for her performance—check out these highlights. For the Tony for best leading actress in a musical, she's up against five others—including LaChanze, who originated the role of Ti Moune in 1990, before Kilgore was even born (LaChanze got a Tony nom back then, too). The awards ceremony takes place June 10, and you can find the full list of nominees here.
Hats off to Kilgore, and let's not forget what she told us about her post-Ti Moune dreams: "If Lin-Manuel Miranda asks me to be Peggy in Hamilton, I will do it. He follows me on Twitter, so we’re getting somewhere." Did you hear that, Lin?
