It seems as though Portlanders will turn any holiday into an excuse to roast a whole pig, even at the expense of PDX’s other favorite consumable, liquor. The cozy Belmont saloon Circa 33 is throwing a party Saturday, June 25th to celebrate the life and times of Carry A. Nation, the temperance movement crusader known for attacking booze-serving bars with a hatchet during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. What better way to toast the crazed accomplishments of a violent radical than by raising a glass of the finest local spirits? No, none of that makes any sense to us, either. But logic doesn’t really come into play when we’re talking pigs and booze in this town.

From noon to midnight, the alley behind Circa 33 will become a swingin’ speakeasy for Carry Nation’s Blind Pig Social, serving up sips from local distilleries and plates of roasted pork. The $5 cover charge gets you in the door for live music, food, drinks, and a raffle for potentially pork-related schwag. Proceeds will benefit the Oregon Distillers Guild, the nonprofit supporting Oregon’s craft spirits revolution, bringing the whole shebang full circle. Historical reenactment bonus: Extra points go to the designated driver that turns up in period costume, but leave the hatchet at home. Cheers!
