After a few wildly successful months selling catch-of-the-day fish out of a bus, Lyf Gildersleeve has taken the next big step: this weekend marked the official opening of the first brick-and-mortar Flying Fish Company location.

The fishmonger-on-wheels concept put Gildersleeve on the Portland seafood map, but the roving shop and variable hours meant it was sometimes hard to track down his high quality goods. Now, with a permanent location at Southeast 23th and Hawthorne, fans of Flying Fish have a reliable spot for fresh local sturgeon, Columbia River salmon, Oregon albacore, Washington oysters, Willapa Bay clams, Gildersleeve’s family-recipe maple smoked salmon and top quality flash-frozen seafood like halibut cheeks, sushi-grade Ahi tuna, and super sweet scallops.

The new location sits in a cozy shed connected to Kruger’s Farm Market, a fantastic spot for affordable local produce next door to Grand Central Bakery’s Hawthorne location, making 23rd and Hawthorne a one-stop open air market for pretty much all of your local grocery needs. Meaty bonus: in addition to his unbeatable local seafood selection, Gildersleeve also supplies local elk, beef, buffalo, lamb, and some of the most affordable farm fresh eggs in town. What more could you need?

With an opening, a closing: Be warned, the new location marks the end of Flying Fish’s D Street Food Cart Pod truck, but the flagship spot at 50th and Hawthorne will remain in operation.
