The World Premiere of Vice's Andy Ricker Documentary

McMenamins Mission Theater will host the debut of Farang: The Story of Chef Andy Ricker on June 26, followed by a Q&A with the film's star and director.

Since the trailer above dropped six months ago, we've been itching to see Vice's full-length documentary on Portland's own James Beard Award-winning Thai food ambassador Andy Ricker—and we're about to get that itch so mercifully scratched. 

Farang: The Story of Chef Andy Ricker, the first feature doc from Vice's Munchies food production company, profiles the former house painter's rise to farang (Thai for "white foreigner") and head honcho of the cult-favorite bicoastal Pok Pok empire—and it's set to debut this month right here in PDX. 

The film includes interviews with Portland Monthly's food editor and critic Karen Brooks on Ricker's decent into culinary madness and why Pok Pok matters. Brooks was one of the first to identify Pok Pok's strange but powerful vision on SE Division. Long before the national fame and down-the-street lines, Brooks named Pok Pok's take-out shack and retooled daylight basement the Oregonian's "Restaurant of the Year" in 2007. 

The free (!) 21+ screening will take place on Thursday, June 26 at 7 pm (doors at 6:30) at McMenamins Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan St.). Pok Pok and Sen Yai will bring the nosh, and Ricker will be on hand to answer questions alongside the doc's director and producers. Seating is limited to the first folks to send an RSVP email to [email protected], so get on that!
