4 Local Root Beers for Better Floats

Add a scoop to these true brews from Oregon's beer pros (they're all way better than Barq's!)

Never let it be said that Portland's brewers don't have a sweeter side. While our local beer havens flaunt epic IPAs and light, summery brews, a handful of go-to operations also boast some stunning house root beers on tap.

And these non-alcoholic wonders mean business. Banish the thought of thin, saccharine headrushes smacked with faux minty flavors. This is hardcore sarsaparilla root, spices, cane sugar magic—by the pint or the float.

Laurelwood Brewing Co Root Beer ($10, 64 oz growler fill at 5115 NE Sandy Blvd or 6716 SE Milwaukie Ave) This burly brew boasts a spicy, anise-y bite with a nose full of classic root beer barrel candies.

Deschutes Brewery Root Beer ($10, growler at 210 NW 11th Ave) A mellow, herby sip with a sweet cane sugar aftertaste, mixed fresh for each order.

Rogue Root Beer ($14.80, growler at 1339 NW Flanders St) No syrupy slop here; just light, creamy sweetness. Bonus: It’s on tap at Ruby Jewel for the ice creamery’s own root beer floats.

Hopworks Urban Brewery Revolution Root Beer ($14, growler at 2944 SE Powell Blvd) A bright and fizzy swig with a thick mouthfeel and intense licorice root kicker.
