Property Watch: A Modest, Modern Beach House in Its Market Debut

While the setting for this Surf Pines beach house couldn’t be more classic Oregon Coast—picture wind-twisted trees and far-reaching ocean views—the home itself is modern to a T. Designed by Portland architect Paul McKean, whose work we previously saw in the remodel of this midcentury stunner, it was built in 2014, and this is the first time it’s ever been on the market.

In form, the house is essentially a stained cedar–clad rectangle propped up on pilings, in which McKean paired an efficient 1,443-square-foot floor plan with streamlined finishes and used the elevated perch to get those views. A long wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in the great room faces the ocean, while additional windows and glass doors are precisely placed to reduce sightlines to neighbors and capture the natural setting wherever possible. This seems appropriate for the location, as Surf Pines is a gated community between Warrenton and Gearhart, with just over 350 homes, generous-sized home lots (this one is a little over an acre), and a less developed feel to the overall landscape.

The main room is generously apportioned, with the kitchen anchoring one end, dining room at the center, and living room arranged before a fireplace feature wall, which has the same dappled blue tile as the kitchen’s backsplash. Knotty wood paneling gives off cozy cabin vibes, and gently contrasts against more modern elements, like the kitchen’s flat-front cabinetry, the built-in shelving and storage, and the black-framed windows.

There’s a primary en-suite, as well as a second bathroom for the remaining two bedrooms. One of those is an excellent kids’ enclave, with four bunks and an extra seating area with room for a couch and a TV.
McKean made sure to include lots of exterior spaces, such as two protected porches, one upstairs and one downstairs, a covered carport with additional utility storage, and a firepit area nestled between board-formed concrete retainer walls. Truly, this home is the embodiment of the phrase "everything you need and nothing you don’t," making it an ideal vacation spot or full-time residence for those who feel at home in modern design.
