Property Watch: An Austenian Estate in Milwaukie
Just a minute away by car from the hustle of SE McLoughlin Boulevard, this end of Milwaukie’s SE Woodland Way seems to narrow and quiet, dense as it is with trees and shrubs instead of traffic. An apt setup, we'd say for this house's reveal. Go through its wrought iron gate, around the circular drive, past the formal rose garden complete with crumbling brick walls, and you'll know you've arrived when you see the pale pink front door.
There's a reason the real estate agent says this place is straight out of a Jane Austen novel. Or perhaps they were thinking of the Bennet family home from the 2005 Pride and Prejudice adaption—same vibes. This architect-designed estate on 2.89 acres has just the right mix of historical detail and whimsical color and wallpaper; several rooms have seen recent updates.
Per the listing details, the home was designed by architect Jamieson Parker in 1929. Parker only worked as an architect for about 10 years, due to the Great Depression, but seven of his homes are on the Historic Registry, and he was also responsible for the First Unitarian Church of Portland and Northwest Portland's Parish of St. Mark. Our favorite tidbit about Parker is that he started out as an apprentice in architect A. E. Doyle's office, where his calligraphy skill landed him the job of inscribing the limestone lettering on the Central Library building.
Back at this house, the tour starts with the gorgeous floors, as they can't help but be noticed: wide plank, top-nailed teak. Yes, they are original. So, too, find a number of historical elements well preserved, including three of the four fireplaces, the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in the living room, and the delicate leaded glass of the arched window. This culminates in the dining room, with its dark wood paneling and built-ins, brick hearth, French doors to the garden, and rondel windows. (Each circle in the latter would have been handmade.)
The color story begins in the kitchen and butler's pantry, with cabinets painted a plum shade that syncs nicely with the terra-cotta–toned tile. It continues upstairs. With a total of four bedroom en-suites up here, three of which have been recently remodeled by Canopy Builds, there's a lot to discover, such as the vibrant green paneling paired with a pink C. F. A. Voysey wallpaper in one bathroom (Voysey was an influence on Parker), and soothing blue tones and cloud print in another.
The primary suite is covered in a dusty blue shade with a peach ceiling and is big enough for a full sitting area. Its pale pink en-suite bathroom has mosaic tile floors, a custom red oak vanity, and shower tile in one of the trending colors of the year (caramel). This is where you'll find the secret alcove with dressing table, custom storage, and dramatic floral wallpaper, all hidden behind an arched mirror.
This being an estate, there's the aforementioned formal rose garden, still in place after being planted for the first owners almost a century ago, plus additional buildings on the grounds. For instance: a studio with a full bathroom perched above the detached garage, and an original brick tea house. This is Austen, after all.
