While Meadows fans can sit in a glassed-in grandstand or a number of indoor bars and betting lounges, the track's new summer schedule enlivened the open-air areas along the track rail.

In racing season, most Meadows horses live and train on the track’s bucolic “backside,” a realm of tough professional horsemen and women.

Many jockeys who ride at Meadows also compete at Seattle’s Emerald Downs and other tracks. In Portland, a given jockey might ride in several different races on a single race day.
