Germany's World Cup Stars Arrive in Portland
Fresh off the plane, seven of FC Bayern München's biggest soccer stars were hustled through PDX customs to greet fans at Adidas's North Portland campus this afternoon. The players arrived mere hours ahead of the 2014 MLS All-Star Game, taking place at Providence Park this evening.
Six of the players participated in Germany's World Cup winning team earlier this summer (with Mario Götze scoring the winning goal in the final against Argentina), while Dutch midfielder Arjen Robben was pivotal in the Netherlands taking third place.
Before heading into the common area for media interviews, the group started on impromptu basketball game in the Adidas gym. Go figure.
Other (unnecessary) observations: Bastian Schweinsteiger (age 30) has got an impressive swatch of grey hair going on. Thomas Müller speaks incredible English, and seemed the easiest and most comfortable with the attention. Manuel Neuer is tall (no surprise). Philip Lahm is short (no surprise). Jerome Boateng sported some lovely nerd glasses and Nike (gasp!) shoes. When Arjen Robben walks normally, he does not cut inside to the left.
